AAPG IMPERIAL BARREL AWARD PROGRAM (IBA)

Sunday, 4 March | 08:30 – 16:15 | Westin Hotel

AAPG’s Imperial Barrel Award Program (IBA) is an annual prospective basin evaluation competition for geoscience graduate students from universities around the world. University teams compete to win scholarship funds for their geoscience department and the international recognition that comes from competing or winning in the competition. The program is rigorous and contributes to AAPG’s mission of promoting petroleum geoscience training and advancing the careers of geoscience students.

In this global competition, university teams analyze a dataset (geology, geophysics, land, production infrastructure, and other relevant materials) in the eight weeks prior to their local competition. Each team delivers their results in a 25 minute presentation to a panel of industry experts. Students have the chance to use state of the art technology on a real dataset, receive feedback from an industry panel and impress potential employers in the audience. The IBA regional and section competition winners qualify to compete against each other in the international finals during the Annual Convention & Exhibition (ACE), taking place in the USA, for a chance to win scholarship funds for their school.

IBA IN THE MIDDLE EAST REGION

The 9th Regional IBA competition will take place on 4 March with students presenting their findings to a panel of industry experts. The winning team will be announced on the following day during the AAPG Middle East Reception and IBA Award Ceremony.

9 teams from Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will compete for a chance to represent their university at the global finals which are being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States on 19 May 2018 during the AAPG Annual Conference and Exhibition (ACE)

Geo-Quiz

TEST YOUR GEOSCIENCE KNOWLEDGE AT THE REGIONAL EAGE MIDDLE EAST GEO-QUIZ!

Tuesday, 6 March | 13:00 – 15:00 | Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre

Student delegates at GEO 2018 are invited to participate in the EAGE Geo-Quiz, where they will put knowledge and skills to the test and compete with and against fellow students!

The winning team will receive 3 travel grants to the 80th EAGE Conference & Exhibition, held from 11-14 June 2018 in Copenhagen, Denmark

The EAGE Geo-Quiz is a fun and interactive way to test your knowledge by competing with and against fellow students. It was first held in 2007 in London, and since then, it has always been one of the highlights of EAGE’s regional conferences and the Annual Meetings. Participants will be able to select their teams, which must consist of no more than 3 students to qualify, students are not required to be from the same university.

HOW TO REGISTER?

Register onsite, visit the EAGE booth and see Naseem there to register with your team of three. Don’t forget to think of a creative name for your team!

ONLY students that have registered and will attend for the conference can register for this opportunity.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Each team must consist of no more than 3 students
  • Each team of 3 will receive 1 buzzer to vote in their answers
  • The questions will be shown on a screen
  • Teams are given a limited time to answer each question

Geoscience related questions will be presented to the teams in a pop-quiz style, with 30-40 seconds to select the correct answer. The quiz will feature 3 rounds, and the team that makes it to the final round with the most points stands to walk away with a fantastic prize of 3 travel grants to 80th EAGE Conference & Exhibition 2018 (11-14 June, Copenhagen, Denmark).

The quiz consists of several rounds with questions related to different fields in the geoscience industry. Areas of interest included in the quiz are geology, petroleum geoscience, geophysics, petrophysics and drilling. The level of the questions differs and will become more difficult as you draw nearer to the final round.

THE PRIZE

A full travel funding to the 80th EAGE Conference & Exhibition, held from 11-14 June 2018, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Challenge Bowl

SEG/DGS MIDDLE EAST CHALLENGE BOWL

Wednesday, 7 March |  10:30am – 12:30 | Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre

The 12th SEG/DGS Annual Middle East Challenge Bowl invites ten teams of two students each from the same university or college in the region to go head-to-head in this exciting competition! Contestants should be student members of SEG and may be at the graduate or undergraduate level. This is an excellent opportunity for geosciences students to display their geophysical and geological knowledge in this fun, rapid fire, push-the-buzzer, who-can-answer-first contest.

THE PRIZE

Winners will represent the Middle East and get an all-expenses-paid trip sponsored by Dhahran Geoscience Society to Anaheim, CA, USA, for the SEG International Exposition and 88th Annual Meeting in October 2018.

HOW DOES THE CONTEST WORK?

The contest will consist of 3 legs of 3 rounds each—9 rounds in total. All teams participate in the first leg, after which the 5 teams with the lowest cumulative score on the first 3 rounds retire leaving the 5 top teams to continue playing.

After the second leg of 3 rounds, the 2 teams with the lowest cumulative score on the second leg only (not including the first leg scoring) retire leaving the top 3 teams to compete in the final 3 rounds. Scoring is reset for each leg rather than being carried over between legs.
